River Road // Henrico + Goochland + City of Richmond
Beginning at the fork in the road where Cary Street ends, River Road, as the name would imply, runs along the James River's north banks from the University of Richmond to the Goochland County line. As the name would also suggest, River Road is the main access road to the neighborhoods that abut the James River in Henrico County's West End.
Unlike Riverside Drive, which runs along the banks of the James's southern side, River Road does not offer vistas of the James as you drive. River Road simple connects many of the most prestigious neighborhoods in the corridor such as Riverlake Colony, University Heights/Westham, Moreland Farms, Windsor on the James, Dorset Woods and many of the smaller subdivisions that surround the County Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek and James River courses.
The homes along the corridor are mostly 1950's era or later set on larger lots with slightly different variations of traditional colonial based designs. Some of the newer areas contain contemporary/transitional interpretations of colonial design but by and large, the River Road corridor is comprised of conservative architecture. University Heights/Westham does offer some diversity with several flat roofed modern homes along Westham Parkway.
