Windsor Farms // City of Richmond
Windsor Farms, it can be argued, is the single most important subdivision in Richmond. The importance of the neighborhood in Richmond stems from parts location, age, history and architecture.
Located just west of the Fan/Museum Districts, Windsor Farms was developed in the 1920’s. The neighborhood, with its distinctive circular street layout, represented a departure from the row home/city block/grid system model of development that drove the urban design in the Fan (and Museum District.) The "English Village" concept with meandering streets and balanced green spaces provided the original inspiration.
Homes in Windsor Farms were designed in a traditional manor with materials of brick and slate in Colonial, Tudor and Cape Cod styles. The lot sizes are ample, especially for a neighborhood in such close proximity to the urban core, and the prevailing pride in ownership within the community gives the setting a feeling of classic and understated elegance.
